The Icelandic magical stave known as Vegvísir first appears in the Huld Manuscript, a collection of occult symbols from 1860. The manuscript provides an image of the symbol with its name, and declares that “if this sign is carried, one will never lose one’s way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known”. The manuscript source of this particular version also states the bearer will not “die of exposure, and will find your way even if you are unfamiliar with a place.”
