The Magus is one of the primary sources for the study of ceremonial magic, and was for many years one of the rarest and most sought after of the 19th century grimoires. Barrett compiled The Magus in 1801 at the height of the ‘Age of Reason’ when magic and religion were seen as irrational superstitions, thereby preserving a vast body of occult knowledge from loss by neglect and persecution. His magnum opus embodies a deep knowledge of Alchemy, Astrology, the Kabbalah, etc., which has consequently served as the inspiration for many later occult movements.
