Maxims of La Rochefoucauld and Chamfort

$11.99

An accomplished soldier and “rebel aristocrat” during the Fronde period, François de La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680) later established his reputation as a man of letters at the court of Louis XIV. In contrast, Nicolas de Chamfort (1741-1794) was a commoner of uncertain parentage who entered aristocratic society through his literary reputation, only to abandon the court and become a Revolutionary. Despite the contrary circumstances of their lives, these two men developed remarkably similar philosophies, as expressed in the maxims collected here. This volume contains La Rochefoucauld’s Reflections with supplemental material and Chamfort’s Maxims in full.
